Camera sensors attract dust and dirt. This is noticeable in the image quality.

Digital cameras with interchangeable lenses have the problem that the statically charged camera image sensor attracts dust and dirt particles.

Regular cleaning (every 1-3 months) of the image sensor is therefore essential.
Cleaning with standard cleaning agents is not recommended, as these leave traces on the sensor that are even more difficult to remove. Even the popular fleece handkerchief does not help here.

Questions about sensor cleaning

Yes, you can clean the sensor yourself. However, we do not recommend this, as it can damage the camera's sensor or other internal components.
The sensor should be checked at least once a year to see whether cleaning is advisable. This always depends on how often you change the Lens. For system cameras, we recommend checking more often, as the sensor is usually exposed when changing Lens.
In the previous section, we showed examples of sensor soiling. Stop down the camera to f/8 or higher and take photos in very bright light. For example, against the sun, against a lamp or on a piece of illuminated paper. If you then see gray or black dots on the camera's display when you zoom in, it is because your camera is dirty.
Sensor cleaning usually takes 2-3 days, but there may be delays if there is a high volume.
A camera sensor can be contaminated with a wide variety of materials, some of which we would like to list below:
  • Dust
  • Hair
  • Sand
  • Smears from previous cleanings
In order for us to be able to carry out the cleaning, the battery should be charged if possible. If you send / bring us the camera without a lens, please make sure to attach / enclose the cap for the lens mount, otherwise there is a risk that your camera will get dirty again or we will charge you for a cap.
From our many years of experience, we can tell you that this cleaning is usually not sufficient and that external cleaning is necessary. We have already explained how you can tell if your camera is dirty.

Tips against dust on the sensor

  1. Check the functions of your system camera to see whether it has a mechanical compartment that closes as soon as you change the Lens.
  2. Change the Lens in a shorter time. If you change the Lens at short intervals, dirt has less chance of penetrating the camera.
  3. Clean your lenses. The back of the Lens will also collect dust in the photo backpack if you place it in the backpack without protective caps. This can then fall onto the sensor during use.
  4. Do not change the Lens in strong winds, as wind is the ideal carrier for small dirt particles. Look for a place in the shade from the wind where you want to change the Lens.
