The portable DR-05X allows to create high-quality stereo recordings in MP3 or WAV format with a resolution up to 96 kHz and 24 bits on microSD memory cards up to 128 gigabytes. Its pair of microphones have omnidirectional characteristics, can handle sound pressure levels up to 125 dB SPL, yet are sensitive enough to capture every detail. A dedicated microphone or line-level source can also be used and connected via a stereo mini-jack, which also provides a power supply for miniature microphones if needed.
The DR-05X is quick and easy to operate with a thumb. Operations such as recording, adjusting the level, deleting unwanted takes, and adding marks can be achieved with just the touch of a button. Other features such as depth filters, variable playback speed, a chromatic tuning function, and more can be accessed through the multilingual menu (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese). In addition to manual level control, there are three different automatic functions to choose from (limiter, peak cut, auto level), which can help prevent distortion during recording. There's also auto leveling, which can compensate for sudden volume jumps during playback, and a built-in speaker for quickly reviewing recordings. Refine the input or output signal with one of six reverb effects, and use the overdub function to add, say, a guitar solo to a recording you made earlier in the rehearsal room. Overdub recording creates a new file while preserving the original - so you can repeat the session as often as you like.
The new Dictation mode makes it easy to skip back and forth during playback at preset time intervals. It can be combined with variable speed and a special speech EQ, which is helpful when transcribing recorded session transcripts, for example. Overwriting recording, also new, allows you to set an entry point from which an existing recording is overwritten, just as with a conventional tape recorder.
In addition to recording on the go, the DR-05X can also be used as a USB audio interface with two inputs and outputs - ideal, for example, for dubbing, live streaming, podcasting and composing in studio quality.
Two AA batteries power the recorder for more than 17 hours, even while recording in CD quality. However, operation is also possible from a USB port or using an optional AC adapter (PS-P520E) or battery pack.
