Balanced lightweight
Weighing just 2,897 grams, the SEL400F28GM is the lightest Lens in its class. This slimming down is made possible by an innovative optical design with three fluorite elements, fewer elements at the head of the lens and additional robust magnesium components. The design also incorporates suggestions from professional photographers around the world. The balanced weight distribution in particular makes it a pleasant, professional partner. The Lens reacts around 50 percent faster than the SAL500F40G from Sony when panning - both hand-held and from a tripod.
Fast, precise autofocus
To keep up with the speed of cameras such as the Alpha 9, two newly developed High Speed XD (extreme Dynamic) linear motors bring the autofocus up to speed. They move the lens groups inside the Lens quickly and precisely. This is why the SEL400F28GM is also five times faster at lens tracking than lenses without two linear motors. To ensure that the motors work perfectly, they are supported by a specially developed motion algorithm that minimizes delays, compensates for instability and ensures low noise when focusing.
Newly developed linear XD (Extreme Dynamic) motor ensures extremely fast, precise and silent AF
The linear XD motors in the SEL400F28GM have been redesigned to provide greater thrust and efficiency than conventional motors to make the most of the rapidly evolving speed of current and future camera bodies. The linear motor design and component layout have been carefully revised to achieve significantly higher thrust. Two of these new motors are built into the SEL400F28GM, providing a 5x increase3 in tracking moving subjects. This means that the extreme speed of modern camera bodies can be used to capture perfect images of the most dynamic sports or nature subjects. The XD motors are also supported by new algorithms developed specifically for them, which significantly improves the motor's response to control signals and minimizes the delay and instability that can occur when driving a large aperture focusing unit for silent, low-vibration operation.
G Master quality and bokeh
To ensure that the image quality of the new Lens is at its usual high level, the three fluoride elements keep chromatic aberration at a low level and suppress color shifts of any kind. The lens also has a Nano AR Coating to eliminate reflections and ghosting effects.
In addition to the high resolution, the Lens boasts a circular aperture with eleven blades. This keeps the background pleasantly soft with beautiful bokeh if desired. Every single lens is individually tested before delivery and - if necessary - corrected to guarantee the highest level of quality.
The new lens is also compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters - while maintaining the same autofocus performance, of course.
Reliable & robust
As neither sporting events nor nature are studio conditions, a robust magnesium housing is the stable backbone of the SEL400M28 GM OSS lens. The lens hood is made of carbon. The surface is designed to keep out dust and moisture. The front lens element has a fluorine coating that prevents dust and fingerprints from sticking to it.
Some functions of the Lens can be controlled directly on the Body.
The SEL400M28 GM has a "Full Time DMF", which allows manual refocusing in no time at all. There are also "focus hold" buttons at four different points, which can also be individually programmed. The focus can be easily set manually thanks to the focus ring. The optical image stabilizer helps to ensure razor-sharp images, especially in dynamic sports shots. Three different setting options make working with the Lens even easier. "Mode 3", for example, is able to keep the focus more precisely on moving objects thanks to its intelligent algorithm. A function ring with selectable "Preset" and "Function" settings rounds off the ease of use of the professional lens.
Practical filter slot8
The SEL400F28GM is equipped with a filter slot into which ø 40.5 mm ND and other types of filters as well as the VF-DCPL1 circular polarizer fit. The VF-DCPL1 circular polarizer can be rotated for the desired polarization when it is inserted in the Lens.
8 A normal filter is inserted in the filter slot as standard. The filter is part of the optical system of the lens and either the normal filter or the (optional) circular polarizer should always be inserted when using the lens. Make sure that a filter is inserted before saving the focus point for the focus preset.
